Matariki marks a time of remembrance, reflection, renewal and hope.
As the Matariki star cluster rises, we are reminded to honour those who came before us, appreciate the people who stand beside us today, and look toward the future we are creating for the generations yet to come.
It is a time when whānau gather, stories are shared, knowledge is passed down, and our connections with the natural world are strengthened.
FROM THE STARS TO OUR HOMES
At Māori House Design Limited, we have taken inspiration from the nine whetū of Matariki to imagine a collection of household products that bring storytelling, design and everyday living together.
Each whetū offers a different source of inspiration — from the forests and waterways to the oceans, rain, winds, remembrance and the hopes we carry for tomorrow.
Our vision is to express these connections through original artwork, carefully considered illumination and practical products that people can enjoy in their homes.
We begin with the Matariki kettle — a vessel of warmth, water and gathering.
But the journey does not end there.
As our company grows, we hope to develop a wider collection of complementary products, each inspired by the meaning of a particular whetū.
OUR PURPOSE
The stories come first.
The designs grow from those stories.
And through the products we hope to create, we seek to encourage curiosity, conversation and the sharing of knowledge across generations.

Matariki is a time of remembrance, renewal, reflection and hope.
When the stars of Matariki appear in the sky, they remind us of the importance of coming together — to remember our tūpuna, celebrate the present and prepare for the generations yet to come.
At Māori House Design Limited, we wanted our first Matariki creation to express something familiar to every home.
Something that brings people together.
TE HUIHUINGA — THE GATHERING
The kettle becomes our vessel of gathering.
Water is poured. Warmth begins. A cup of tea is prepared.
Around that simple moment, conversations begin, stories are shared and connections between whānau, friends and visitors are strengthened.
Just as Matariki invites people to gather, the kettle creates an everyday opportunity to come together.
TE WHAKAIRO — THE DESIGN EXPRESSION
Our gold Matariki kettle concept draws inspiration from the celestial pathways of Te Kāhui o Matariki.
Its illuminated gold patterns symbolise warmth, guidance, continuity and the passing of knowledge from one generation to the next.
The dark body represents the night sky, while the glowing artwork expresses the light of hope and the possibilities of a new beginning.
The artwork is a contemporary design expression inspired by our pūrākau, rather than a reproduction of traditional whakairo.
TE AKORANGA — THE LESSON
Matariki reminds us that wellbeing is strengthened through connection.
A home is more than the objects within it.
It is a place where people gather, where memories are created and where knowledge is shared.
Our Matariki kettle is a design concept inspired by that simple but powerful idea.

Tupuānuku — Food and nourishment from the earth.
Tupuārangi — Food and life within the forests.
Waitī — Freshwater and its living treasures.
Waitā — The ocean and its abundance.
Waipuna-ā-rangi — Rain and the waters from above.
Ururangi — Winds and the changing seasons.
Hiwa-i-te-rangi — Hopes, aspirations and dreams for the future.
